Introduction Impacts of climate change on human health receive increasing attention. However, the connections of climate change with well-being and mental health are still poorly understood. Objective As part of the Horizon Europe project TRIGGER, we aim to deepen the understanding of the relationships between climate change and human mental health and well-being in Europe by focusing on environmental and socio-individual determinants. Methods This study is a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA guidelines using Embase, Medline and Web of Science. Results 143 records were retrieved. The results show that climate change and its specific hazards (air pollution, floods, wildfires, meteorological variables, and temperature extremes) impact human well-being and mental health. Discussion Mental health and well-being outcomes are complex, extremely individual, and can be long lasting. Determinants like the living surrounding, human’s life activities as well as socio-individual determinants alter the linkage between climate change and mental health. The same determinant can exert both a pathogenic and a salutogenic effect, depending on the outcome. Knowing the effects of the determinants is of high relevance to improve resilience. Several pathways were identified. For instance, higher level of education and female gender lead to perceiving climate change as a bigger threat but increase preparedness to climate hazards. Elderly, children and adolescents are at higher risks of mental health problems. On the other hand, social relation, cohesiveness and support from family and friends are generally protective. Green and blue spaces improve well-being and mental health. Overall, comparing the different hazard-outcome relationships is difficult due to varying definitions, measurement techniques, spatial and temporal range, scales, indicators and population samples. Amid accelerating climate change, climate-related hazards—such as floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and sea-level rise—increasingly drive land transformations and pose growing risks to housing markets by affecting property valuations, insurance availability, mortgage performance, and broader financial stability. This review synthesizes recent progress in two distinct domains and their linkage: (1) assessing climate-related financial risks in housing markets, and (2) applying AI-driven remote sensing for hazard detection and land transformation monitoring. While both areas have advanced significantly, important limitations remain. Existing housing finance studies often rely on static models and coarse spatial data, lacking integration with real-time environmental information, thereby reducing their predictive power and policy relevance. In parallel, remote sensing studies using AI primarily focus on detecting physical hazards and land surface changes, yet rarely connect these spatial transformations to financial outcomes. To address these gaps, this review proposes an integrative framework that combines AI-enhanced remote sensing technologies with financial econometric modeling to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and policy relevance of climate-related risk assessment in housing markets. By bridging environmental hazard data—including land-based indicators of exposure and damage—with financial indicators, the framework enables more granular, dynamic, and equitable assessments than conventional approaches. Nonetheless, its implementation faces technical and institutional barriers, including spatial and temporal mismatches between datasets, fragmented regulatory and behavioral inputs, and the limitations of current single-task AI models, which often lack transparency. Overcoming these challenges will require innovation in AI modeling, improved data-sharing infrastructures, and stronger cross-disciplinary collaboration. © 2025 by the authors.

In May 2011, the municipality of Slave Lake, Alberta, was hit by a devastating wildfire; the second costliest natural disaster in Canada at the time. Residents of Slave Lake were forced to evacuate for at least a month. This case study uses longitudinal income tax data from 2004 to 2018 to estimate the short, medium, and long-term individual economic effects of this wildfire. Estimates suggest an average drop in total income of 10.5% relative to a counter-factual scenario with no wildfire over the 7 years following the wildfire, mainly driven by a decrease in employment income. The percentage of total income lost is similar for males and females. The largest effects are found for workers in the agriculture and forestry sectors. Back-of-the- envelope calculations suggest an aggregate loss in employment income of $150 million in the 7 years following the disaster, equivalent to over 13% of direct economic losses due to property damage, firefighting, and contemporaneous business closure.

The preparation of accurate multi-hazard susceptibility maps is essential to effective disaster risk management. Past studies have relied mainly on traditional machine learning models, but these models do not perform well for complex spatial patterns. To address this gap, this study uses two meta-heuristic algorithms (Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)) to provide an optimized Random Forest (RF) model with better predictive ability. We focus on four significant hazards—landslides, land subsidence, wildfires, and floods—in Kurdistan Province, Iran, using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery collected between 2015 and 2022. Furthermore, two models of RF-GA and RF-PSO were utilized to create multi-hazard susceptibility, which were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC). The RF-GA algorithm achieved 91.1% accuracy for flood hazards, 83.8% for wildfires, and 99.1% for landslide hazards. In contrast, utilizing RF-PSO resulted in a 95.9% accuracy for land subsidence hazards. The combined RF-GA algorithm demonstrated superior accuracy to individual RF modeling techniques. Furthermore, eastern regions are more prone to floods and land subsidence, whereas western areas face more significant risks from landslides and wildfires. Additionally, floods and land subsidence exhibit a considerable correlation, impacting each other’s occurrence, while wildfires and landslides demonstrate interacting dynamics, influencing each other’s likelihood of occurrence. © The Author(s) 2025.

Les événements météorologiques extrêmes (EME) et les désastres qu’ils entrainent provoquent des conséquences psychosociales qui sont modulées en fonction de différents facteurs sociaux. On constate aussi que les récits médiatiques et culturels qui circulent au sujet des EME ne sont pas représentatifs de l’ensemble des expériences de personnes sinistrées : celles qui en subissent les conséquences les plus sévères tendent aussi à être celles qu’on « entend » le moins dans l’espace public. Ces personnes sont ainsi susceptibles de vivre de l’injustice épistémique, ce qui a des effets délétères sur le soutien qu’elles reçoivent. Face à ces constats s’impose la nécessité de mieux comprendre la diversité des expériences d’EME et d’explorer des stratégies pour soutenir l’ensemble des personnes sinistrées dans leur rétablissement psychosocial. Cet article soutient que la recherche narrative peut contribuer à répondre à ces objectifs. En dépeignant des réalités multiples, la recherche narrative centrée sur les récits de personnes sinistrées présente aussi un intérêt significatif pour l’amélioration des pratiques d’intervention en contexte de désastre. , Extreme weather events (EWE) and their resulting disasters cause psychosocial consequences that are moderated by different social factors. Media and cultural accounts of EWEs do not represent the full range of disaster survivor experiences, that is, those who experienced the most severe consequences also tend to be those least “heard” in the public arena. These people are therefore most likely to experience forms of epistemic injustice that negatively impact the support offered to cope with disaster. Considering these findings, there is a need to better understand the diversity of EWE experiences and explore strategies for supporting all disaster survivors in their psychosocial recovery. This article argues that narrative research can help meet these needs. By portraying the multiple realities of people affected by EWEs, narrative research focusing on the stories of disaster survivors is also of significant interest for improving intervention practices in this context.

Abstract Real-time precipitation data are essential for weather forecasting, flood prediction, drought monitoring, irrigation, fire prevention, and hydroelectric management. To optimize these activities, reliable precipitation estimates are crucial. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) leads the Canadian Precipitation Analysis (CaPA) project, providing near-real-time precipitation estimates across North America. However, during winter, CaPA’s 6-hourly accuracy is limited because many automatic surface observations are not assimilated due to wind-induced gauge undercatch. The objective of this study is to evaluate the added value of adjusted hourly precipitation amounts for gauge undercatch due to wind speed in CaPA. A recent ECCC dataset of hourly precipitation measurements from automatic precipitation gauges across Canada is included in CaPA as part of this study. Precipitation amounts are adjusted based on several types of transfer functions, which convert measured precipitation into what high-quality equipment would have measured with reduced undercatch. First, there are no notable differences in CaPA when comparing the performance of the universal transfer function with that of several climate-specific transfer functions based on wind speed and air temperature. However, increasing solid precipitation amounts using a specific type of transfer function that depends on snowfall intensity rather than near-surface air temperature is more likely to improve CaPA’s precipitation estimates during the winter season. This improvement is more evident when the objective evaluation is performed with direct comparison with the Adjusted Daily Rainfall and Snowfall (AdjDlyRS) dataset.

Combined sewer surcharges in densely urbanized areas have become more frequent due to the expansion of impervious surfaces and intensified precipitation caused by climate change. These surcharges can generate system overflows, causing urban flooding and pollution of urban areas. This paper presents a novel methodology to mitigate sewer system surcharges and control surface water. In this methodology, flow control devices and urban landscape retrofitting are proposed as strategies to reduce water inflow into the sewer network and manage excess water on the surface during extreme rainfall events. For this purpose, a 1D/2D dual drainage model was developed for two case studies located in Montreal, Canada. Applying the proposed methodology to these two sites led to a reduction of the volume of wastewater overflows by 100% and 86%, and a decrease in the number of surface overflows by 100% and 71%, respectively, at the two sites for a 100-year return period 3-h Chicago design rainfall. It also controlled the extent of flooding, reduced the volume of uncontrolled surface floods by 78% and 80% and decreased flooded areas by 68% and 42%, respectively, at the two sites for the same design rainfall.

Objectifs Malgré l’existence de plusieurs traitements en ligne pour les personnes avec un trouble de stress posttraumatique (TSPT), peu d’études se sont penchées sur les données d’utilisation d’une telle intervention. Étant donné le potentiel de la modalité en ligne à pallier les obstacles limitant l’accès à l’aide psychologique, il importe de documenter les interactions des usagers avec ces outils en lien avec l’amélioration des symptômes ciblés. L’objectif de cette étude est de documenter les données d’utilisation de la plateforme de traitement en ligne RESILIENT par les personnes évacuées des feux de Fort McMurray, Alberta (Canada), et d’examiner leur association avec l’efficacité du traitement sur les symptômes de trouble de stress posttraumatique (TSPT), d’insomnie et de dépression, et l’adhésion au traitement, mesurée par le nombre de modules consultés par les participants. Méthode Quatre-vingt-dix-sept personnes évacuées des feux de Fort McMurray présentant des symptômes de TSPT, d’insomnie et de dépression sont incluses dans la présente étude. Les participants étaient invités à utiliser la plateforme RESILIENT, un autotraitement en ligne guidé par un thérapeute qui cible les symptômes de TSPT, le sommeil et l’humeur, et comprend 12 modules offrant des stratégies de thérapies cognitives et comportementales (TCC) basées sur les données probantes. Des données d’utilisation objectives (p. ex. nombre de modules consultés) et subjectives (p. ex. niveau d’efforts investis) ont été recueillies. Résultats Afin de prédire la réduction des symptômes de TSPT, de dépression et d’insomnie, ainsi que le nombre de modules consultés par les participants, des modèles de régressions séquentielles ont été effectués, avec un contrôle statistique pour les symptômes prétraitement, l’âge et le genre. Les modèles finaux ont révélé qu’une réduction des symptômes de TSPT, de dépression et d’insomnie était prédite significativement par le nombre de modules consultés (β = - 0,41 ; - 0,53 ; - 0,49 respectivement, tous p < 0,001) ainsi que par le niveau d’efforts moyen autorapporté au module 7 (mi-parcours) (β = - 0,43 ; p < 0,001 ; β = - 0,38 ; p = 0,005 et β = - 0,36 ; p = 0,007 respectivement). Le nombre de modules consultés, par ailleurs, était prédit significativement par le nombre de mots dans le 4 e module (β = 0,34 ; p < 0,001) et dans le 7 e module (β = 0,44 ; p < 0,001), ainsi que par le nombre d’entrées dans le journal du sommeil (β = 0,28 ; p < 0,001). Conclusion Les résultats ont confirmé qu’une plus grande interaction avec la plateforme influence positivement l’efficacité du traitement et qu’une utilisation accrue en début de traitement semble être un bon prédicteur de l’achèvement de celui-ci. Cette étude confirme l’importance de soutenir l’engagement des participants envers le traitement en ligne afin d’optimiser son efficacité. , Objectives Despite the existence of several online treatments for people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), few studies have examined usage data for such interventions. Given the potential of the online modality to alleviate barriers limiting access to psychological help, it is important to document users’ interactions with these tools in relation to the improvement of targeted symptoms. The objective of this study is to document usage data of the online treatment platform RESILIENT by people evacuated from the Fort McMurray, Alberta (Canada) fires, and to examine their association with the effectiveness of treatment on symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), insomnia and depression, and adherence to treatment, as measured by the number of modules accessed by participants. Methods Ninety-seven people evacuated from the Fort McMurray fires with symptoms of PTSD, insomnia and depression were included in this study. Participants were invited to use the RESILIENT platform, an online therapist-assisted self-help treatment program that targets PTSD symptoms, sleep and mood, and includes 12 modules offering evidence-based cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) strategies. Both objective (e.g., number of modules accessed) and subjective (e.g., level of effort invested) usage data were collected. Results In order to predict the reduction in PTSD, depression and insomnia symptoms, as well as the number of modules accessed by participants, sequential regression models were conducted, with statistical control for pretreatment symptoms, age and gender. The final models revealed that a reduction in PTSD, depression and insomnia symptoms was significantly predicted by the number of modules accessed (β = -.41; -.53; -.49 respectively, all p <.001) as well as the mean self-reported level of effort at module 7 (midway) (β = -.43; p <.001; β = -.38; p = .005 and β = -.36; p = .007 respectively). The number of modules accessed, on the other hand, was significantly predicted by the number of words in the 4th module (β = .34; p <.001) and 7th module (β = .44; p <.001) and the number of sleep diary entries (β = .28; p <.001). Conclusion These results confirmed that increased interaction with the platform positively influences treatment effectiveness and that increased use at the beginning of treatment appears to be a good predictor of treatment completion. This study confirms the importance of sustaining participants’ commitment to online treatment in order to optimize its effectiveness.

Abstract Centennial‐to‐millennial temperature records of the past provide a context for the interpretation of current and future changes in climate. Quaternary climates have been relatively well studied in north‐east North America and the adjacent Atlantic Ocean over the last decades, and new research methods have been developed to improve reconstructions. We present newly inferred reconstructions of sea surface temperature for the north‐western Atlantic region, together with a compilation of published temperature records. The database thus comprises a total of 86 records from both marine and terrestrial sites, including lakes, peatlands, ice and tree rings, each covering at least part of the Holocene. For each record, we present details on seasons covered, chronologies and information on radiocarbon dates and analytical time steps. The 86 records contain a total of 154 reconstructions of temperature and temperature‐related variables. Main proxies include pollen and dinocysts, while summer was the season for which the highest number of reconstructions were available. Many records covered most of the Holocene, but many dinocyst records did not extend to the surface, due to sediment mixing, and dendroclimate records were limited to the last millennium. The database allows for the exploration of linkages between sea ice and climate and may be used in conjunction with other palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironmental records, such as wildfire records and peatland dynamics. This inventory may also aid the identification of gaps in the geographic distribution of past temperature records thus guiding future research efforts.

Abstract This study investigates possible trends and teleconnections in temperature extremes in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Daily maximum and minimum temperature data covering the period 1971–2021 at 26 stations located in NSW were used. Three indices, which focus on daily maximum temperature, daily minimum temperature, and average daily temperature in terms of Excessive Heat Factor (EHF) were investigated to identify the occurrence of heatwaves (HWs). The study considered HWs of different durations (1-, 5-, and 10-days) in relation to intensity, frequency, duration, and their first occurrence parameters. Finally, the influences of three global climate drivers, namely – the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) were investigated with associated heatwave attributes for extended Austral summers. In this study, an increasing trend in both hot days and nights was observed for most of the selected stations within the study area. The increase was more pronounced for the last decade (2011–2021) of the investigated time period. The number, duration and frequency of the heatwaves increased over time considering the EHF criterion, whereas no particular trend was detected in cases of TX90 and TN90. It was also evident that the first occurrence of all the HWs shifted towards the onset of the extended summer while considering the EHF criterion of HWs. The correlations between heatwave attributes and climate drivers depicted that heatwave over NSW was positively influenced by both the IOD and ENSO and negatively correlated with SAM. The findings of this study will be useful in formulating strategies for managing the impacts of extreme temperature events such as bushfires, floods, droughts to the most at-risk regions within NSW.

Depuis de nombreuses années, les chercheurs dans le domaine du stress maternel prénatal (SMP) associé à des catastrophes naturelles cumulent des données probantes suggérant un effet de ce type de stresseur sur le développement de l’enfant. Plusieurs obstacles freinent cependant le transfert de ces connaissances (TC) à leurs potentielles bénéficiaires, les femmes enceintes. Un premier obstacle est qu’il n’existe pas de synthèse de connaissances quantifiant l’effet du SMP sur les différentes sphères de développement de l’enfant. De plus, les besoins informationnels des femmes enceintes à ce sujet ne sont pas connus. Ensuite, d’un point de vue éthique, il est difficile de se positionner quant à la meilleure stratégie de TC à employer pour informer les femmes enceintes sans leur imposer un stress additionnel. Cette thèse vise donc à déterminer comment informer les femmes enceintes au sujet des conséquences du stress pendant la grossesse sans les stresser davantage. Pour ce faire, une revue méta-analytique de l’effet du SMP associé à des catastrophes naturelles sur le développement de l’enfant a été réalisée pour quantifier cet effet. Par la suite, un questionnaire a été élaboré pour sonder les femmes issues de deux cohortes distinctes, une première ayant été exposée aux feux de forêt de Fort McMurray pendant la grossesse, puis une seconde localisée à Montréal et n’ayant pas été exposée à une catastrophe naturelle au cours de la grossesse. Les items du questionnaire cherchaient à déterminer leurs connaissances au sujet du SMP ainsi que leur désir d’en avoir su davantage à ce propos au cours de leur dernière grossesse. Une grille d’entretien originale a ensuite permis d’interviewer un sous-échantillon des femmes de la cohorte de Montréal pour préciser leurs besoins informationnels et les paramètres qui devraient guider un processus de TC à cet effet. Cette dernière étude a cependant été interrompue en raison de la pandémie de COVID-19 et seuls les résultats préliminaires en sont ici présentés. Plusieurs constats sont ressortis des méta-analyses et des méta-régressions. D’abord, le SMP a un effet, petit, mais durable, sur l’ensemble des sphères de développement de l’enfant. Ensuite, les difficultés objectives et la détresse psychologique sont les composantes du SMP pour lesquelles les plus grands effets ont été trouvés. Il semble également que l’exposition à une tempête de verglas affecte encore plus le développement de l’enfant que celle à une inondation. Les résultats au questionnaire des deux cohortes de femmes a permis de lever le voile sur le manque de connaissances à combler chez ces dernières concernant principalement les conséquences concrètes du SMP sur le développement de l’enfant, puis d’établir que les deux cohortes de femmes auraient majoritairement voulu en savoir davantage à ce sujet au cours de leur dernière grossesse. Enfin, les données complémentaires issues des entretiens avec les femmes de la cohorte de Montréal indiquent que les professionnels de la santé seraient les utilisateurs de connaissances à privilégier et que l’approche à employer pour faire ce TC devrait être empathique, non culpabilisante, centrée sur la femme dans sa globalité et ajustée à son style de recherche d’informations. De prochaines études dans le domaine du SMP pourront venir pallier certaines limites de cette thèse. Les équipes de recherche pourront utiliser le questionnaire et la grille d’entretien pour évaluer les besoins informationnels des femmes au sujet du SMP dans différents contextes (p.ex. pandémie de COVID-19). Maintenant qu’il a été déterminé que le SMP a un effet sur le développement de l’enfant, il serait utile de réaliser une revue de littérature pour recenser les interventions permettant d’estomper cet effet afin de bien outiller les femmes enceintes. Finalement, connaissant désormais les besoins informationnels des femmes enceintes, l’organisation d’un atelier délibératif avec les professionnels de la santé permettrait de mettre au point une stratégie de TC prenant également en compte leur réalité. En conclusion, cette thèse a permis de jeter les bases d’une stratégie de TC qui pourrait informer les femmes enceintes au sujet des conséquences du SMP associé aux catastrophes naturelles sans les stresser davantage.

Les changements climatiques anthropogéniques posent des défis énormes pour toutes les sociétés humaines. Ces défis majeurs mettront à l’épreuve les capacités d’adaptation des États et de ses institutions et des communautés partout dans le monde et devront se résoudre par un élan de solidarité humaine afin d’en atténuer les conséquences. Le Canada connaît déjà un réchauffement climatique important. Le pays a d’ailleurs récemment été touché par des événements climatiques extrêmes : des canicules, des feux de forêt, une sécheresse anormale et des inondations dont l’intensité est prévue d’augmenter avec les changements climatiques anthropogéniques. La province du Québec a quant à elle été touchée par de fortes inondations entre 2017 et 2019. L’objectif principal de la présente étude vise à discuter la manière dont le paradigme écosocial peut faire évoluer le travail social en tant que champ de savoir et d’intervention dans un contexte de changements climatiques. Cette étude s’est appuyée sur des données issues de groupes focus réalisés avec des intervenants suite aux inondations survenues au Québec (2017-2019). Notre analyse vise les interventions réalisées en contexte d’inondations, dans le sud de la province, mise en œuvre par le système de santé. Les données ont été collectées lors d’entrevues de groupe réalisées avec des intervenants psychosociaux et des gestionnaires de CI(U)SSS au courant des mois d’octobre et de novembre 2019. Les thèmes suivants ont émergé des analyses: les caractéristiques des inondations de 2019, les divergences d’opinions vis-à-vis des changements climatiques, l’aide et le soutien apportés durant les inondations et la participation citoyenne. J’insisterai également sur l’exacerbation possible des inégalités sociales dans ce contexte. D’autres thèmes se sont également révélés importants : l’engagement des intervenants psychosociaux, la participation et la décentralisation des décisions politiques. Enfin, mes réflexions porteront sur les conséquences sociales qu’entrainent les inondations et sur les types de pratiques sociales qui s’avèrent pertinentes à l’ère des changements climatiques et dans un contexte d’urgence.

Abstract. Black carbon aerosol (BC), which is emitted from natural and anthropogenic sources (e.g., wildfires, coal burning), can contribute to magnify climate warming at high latitudes by darkening snow- and ice-covered surfaces, and subsequently lowering their albedo. Therefore, modeling the atmospheric transport and deposition of BC to the Arctic is important, and historical archives of BC accumulation in polar ice can help to validate such modeling efforts. Here we present a > 250-year ice-core record of refractory BC (rBC) deposition on Devon ice cap, Canada, spanning the years from 1735 to 1992. This is the first such record ever developed from the Canadian Arctic. The estimated mean deposition flux of rBC on Devon ice cap for 1963–1990 is 0.2 mg m−2 a−1, which is at the low end of estimates from Greenland ice cores obtained using the same analytical method ( ∼ 0.1–4 mg m−2 a−1). The Devon ice cap rBC record also differs from the Greenland records in that it shows only a modest increase in rBC deposition during the 20th century. In the Greenland records a pronounced rise in rBC is observed from the 1880s to the 1910s, which is largely attributed to midlatitude coal burning emissions. The deposition of contaminants such as sulfate and lead increased on Devon ice cap in the 20th century but no concomitant rise in rBC is recorded in the ice. Part of the difference with Greenland could be due to local factors such as melt–freeze cycles on Devon ice cap that may limit the detection sensitivity of rBC analyses in melt-impacted core samples, and wind scouring of winter snow at the coring site. Air back-trajectory analyses also suggest that Devon ice cap receives BC from more distant North American and Eurasian sources than Greenland, and aerosol mixing and removal during long-range transport over the Arctic Ocean likely masks some of the specific BC source–receptor relationships. Findings from this study suggest that there could be a large variability in BC aerosol deposition across the Arctic region arising from different transport patterns. This variability needs to be accounted for when estimating the large-scale albedo lowering effect of BC deposition on Arctic snow/ice.

Abstract When the Syrian war erupted in 2011, the Lebanese government withdrew from managing the influx of Syrian refugees. Three years later, Lebanon’s Council of Ministers set new regulations for Syrians with the purpose of reducing access to territory and persuading refugees to leave the country. This article analyses the reasons for and the outcomes of Lebanon’s response to the refugee crisis before and after 2014. It then examines, through a qualitative exploratory approach and based on two longitudinal case studies, the impact of Lebanese regulations. In both cases, the so-called ‘temporary gatherings’ became permanent settlements beyond the government’s control. The government’s strategy backfired: in attempting to avoid ghettos, it created them. We conclude that when refugee situations become protracted, most efforts aimed at excluding refugees fail. Excluding refugees increases their vulnerability and reduces their chances of repatriation or resettlement. To prevent this, we argue that hosting policies must lead to the temporary integration of refugees within urban systems and public institutions.

This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of an online CBT intervention with limited therapist contact targeting a range of posttraumatic symptoms among evacuees from the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires. One hundred and thirty-six residents of Fort McMurray who reported either moderate PTSD symptoms (PCL-5 ≥ 23) or mild PTSD symptoms (PCL-5 ≥ 10) with moderate depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) or subthreshold insomnia symptoms (ISI ≥ 8) were randomized either to a treatment (n = 69) or a waitlist condition (n = 67). Participants were on average 45 years old, and mostly identified as White (82%) and as women (76%). Primary outcomes were PTSD, depression, and insomnia symptoms. Secondary outcomes were anxiety symptoms and disability. Significant Assessment Time × Treatment Condition interactions were observed on all outcomes, indicating that access to the treatment led to a decrease in posttraumatic stress (F[1,117.04] = 12.128, p = .001; d = .519, 95% CI = .142–.895), depression (F[1,118.29] = 9.978, p = .002; d = .519, 95% CI = .141–.898) insomnia (F[1,117.60] = 4.574, p = .035; d = .512, 95% CI = .132–.892), and anxiety (F[1,119.64] = 5.465, p = .021; d = .421, 95% CI = .044–.797) symptom severity and disability (F[1,111.55] = 7.015, p = .009; d = .582, 95% CI = .200–.963). Larger effect sizes (d = 0.823–1.075) were observed in participants who completed at least half of the treatment. The RESILIENT online treatment platform was successful to provide access to specialized evidence-based mental health care after a disaster.

Pesticide transport by surface runoff depends on climate, agricultural practices, topography, soil characteristics, crop type, and pest phenology. To accurately assess the impact of climate change, these factors must be accounted for in a single framework by integrating their interaction and uncertainty. This paper presents the development and application of a framework to assess the impact of climate change on pesticide transport by surface runoff in southern Quebec (Canada) for the 1981-2040 period. The crop enemies investigated were: weeds for corn (Zea mays); and for apple orchard (Malus pumila), three insect pests (codling moth (Cydia pomonella), plum curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar) and apple maggot (Rhagoletis pomonella)) and two diseases (apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) and fire blight (Erwinia amylovora)). A total of 23 climate simulations, 19 sites, and 11 active ingredients were considered. The relationship between climate and phenology was accounted for by bioclimatic models of the Computer Centre for Agricultural Pest Forecasting (CIPRA) software. Exported loads of pesticides were evaluated at the edge-of-field scale using the Pesticide Root Zone Model (PRZM), simulating both hydrology and chemical transport. A stochastic model was developed to account for PRZM parameter uncertainty. Results of this study indicate that for the 2011-2040 period, application dates would be advanced from 3 to 7 days on average with respect to the 1981-2010 period. However, the impact of climate change on maximum daily rainfall during the application window is not statistically significant, mainly due to the high variability of extreme rainfall events. Hence for the studied sites and crop enemies considered, climate change impact on pesticide transported in surface runoff is not statistically significant throughout the 2011-2040 period.

Abstract Run-of-river power plants (ROR) represent the majority of hydroelectric plants worldwide. Their environmental impacts are not well documented and are believed to be limited, particularly regarding the contamination of food webs by methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxin. RORs are typically installed in small rivers where combined effects of watershed disturbances with dam construction can complicate environmental management. We report a multi-year case study on the Saint-Maurice River (Canada) where an unpredicted temporary increase in MeHg accumulation in predator fish was observed after the construction of two ROR plants. The associated pondages acted as sedimentation basins for mercury (Hg) and organic matter from a watershed disturbed by a forest fire and by logging. This fresh organic carbon likely fueled microbial MeHg production. Hg methylation was more associated with environmental conditions than to the presence of Hg, and main methylating microbial groups were identified. A constructed wetland was a site of significant Hg methylation but was not the main source of the fish Hg increase. Organic carbon degradation was the main driver of MeHg accumulation at the base of the food chain whereas trophic levels explained the variations at the top of the food chain. Overall, carbon cycling was a key driver of Hg dynamics in this system, and ROR plants can cause temporary (ca. 12 years) Hg increase in food webs when developed in disturbed watersheds, although this increase is smaller than for large reservoirs. Recommendations for future ROR construction are to establish a good environmental monitoring plan with initial high temporal resolution and to consider recent and potential watershed disturbances in the plan.

Background: Based on the most common psychological difficulties of the evacuees from the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires in Alberta, Canada, a therapist-guided cognitive behavioral self-treatment was developed. This study aimed to explore how gender influences the usage and subjective appreciation of the RESILIENT online treatment. Methods: Our study included 81 English-speaking evacuees with significant posttraumatic symptoms, or with some posttraumatic symptoms accompanied by at least mild depression symptoms or subclinical insomnia, and who logged into the platform at least once. Various usage and subjective appreciation variables were analyzed, including number of completed sessions, number of logins, number of words per session, perceived efforts, perception of usefulness and intention to continue using the different strategies. Results: No difference was detected in most objective usage indicators. The number of words written in sessions 7 and 10 was significantly greater for women than for men. Regarding subjective appreciation, men had a greater perception of having put strong efforts in the cognitive restructuring strategy, while women reported in a greater proportion that they wanted to continue using physical exercise as a behavioral activation strategy. Conclusions: Our study offers a first look into how women and men use online treatments, and what their preferences are.
