Abstract Fluvial biogeomorphology has proven to be efficient in understanding the evolution of rivers in terms of vegetation succession and channel adjustment. The role of floods as the primary disturbance regime factor has been widely studied, and our knowledge of their effects on vegetation and channel adjustment has grown significantly in the last two decades. However, cold rivers experiencing ice dynamics (e.g., ice jams and mechanical breakups) as an additional disturbance regime have not yet been studied within a biogeomorphological scope. This study investigated the long‐term effects of ice dynamics on channel adjustments and vegetation trajectories in two rivers with different geomorphological behaviours, one laterally confined (Matapédia River) and one mobile (Petite‐Cascapédia River), in Quebec, Canada. Using dendrochronological analysis, historical data and aerial photographs from 1963 to 2016, this study reconstructed ice jam chronologies, characterized flood regimes and analysed vegetation and channel changes through a photointerpretation approach. The main findings of this study indicate that geomorphological impacts of mechanical ice breakups are not significant at the decadal and reach scales and that they might not be the primary factors of long‐term geomorphological control. However, results have shown that vegetation was more sensitive to ice dynamics. Reaches presenting frequent ice jams depicted high regression rates and turnovers even during years with very low floods, suggesting that ice dynamics significantly increase shear stress on plant patches. This study also highlights the high resiliency of both rivers to ice jam disturbances, with vegetation communities and channel forms recovering within a decade. With the uncertainties following the reach/corridor and decadal scales, future research should focus on long‐term monitoring and refined spatial scales to better understand the mechanisms behind the complex interactions among ice dynamics, vegetation and hydrogeomorphological processes in cold rivers.

Durant les mois de janvier et février 2019, trois embâcles ont forcé l’arrêt de la navigation commerciale vers le Port de Montréal. Ce mémoire présente les conditions météorologiques associées aux embâcles sur le fleuve Saint Laurent de l’hiver 2018-2019. Il explique que les embâcles se développent à la suite d’arrêts de glace dans le bief problématique du lac Saint-Pierre entre la courbe Louiseville et le bassin Yamachiche. Pour ce faire, l’étude considère la production de glace en amont jusqu’au lac Saint-Louis. Il explique pourquoi ce bief est si vulnérable à l’initiation d’embâcles en présentant les neuf concepts de vulnérabilité du lac Saint-Pierre. De plus, il propose quatorze recommandations concrètes pour améliorer la fiabilité de navigation hivernale en réduisant les risques d’embâcles. En considérant ces recommandations, différentes opportunités de télédétection et une interface utilisateur sont présentées. L’opportunité de télédétection introduit la possibilité d’usage d’images de RADARSAT Constellation Mission et de photographies par drone afin d’évaluer des éléments clés comme la progression du couvert de glace, la largeur effective du chenal, la concentration de glace en transit et la vitesse de la glace. L’interface est un prototype d’outil d’aide à la décision de source libre qui permet d’obtenir d’autres informations quantitatives sur les risques d’arrêts de glace et du même fait, d’embâcles de glace.

Abstract The present study analyses the impacts of past and future climate change on extreme weather events for southern parts of Canada from 1981 to 2100. A set of precipitation and temperature‐based indices were computed using the downscaled Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) multi‐model ensemble projections at 8 km resolution over the 21st Century for two representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios: RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. The results show that this region is expected to experience stronger warming and a higher increase in precipitation extremes in future. Generally, projected changes in minimum temperature will be greater than changes in maximum temperature, as shown by respective indices. A decrease in frost days and an increase in warm nights will be expected. By 2100 there will be no cool nights and cool days. Daily minimum and maximum temperatures will increase by 12 and 7°C, respectively, under the RCP8.5 scenario, when compared with the reference period 1981–2000. The highest warming in minimum temperature and decrease in cool nights and days will occur in Ontario and Quebec provinces close to the Great Lakes and Hudson Bay. The highest warming in maximum temperature will occur in the southern parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Annual total precipitation is expected to increase by about 16% and the occurrence of heavy precipitation events by five days. The highest increase in annual total precipitation will occur in the northern parts of Ontario and Quebec and in western British Columbia.

Peatlands are relatively common in the province of Quebec (Canada) where they occupy about 12% of the surface. The hydrology of peatlands remains insufficiently documented, more specifically during the spring period where data are currently lacking in many regions, including in the Quebec boreal territory. The paucity of spring data are due to snowmelt that causes flooding in peatlands and along rivers, which makes hydrometry complicated during this period of the year. In this paper, the Peatland Hydrological Impact Model (PHIM) was coupled with a snowmelt module (CemaNeige) to simulate spring flows in an ombrotrophic peatland located in the Romaine River watershed (Quebec). Discharge data from two summer seasons (2019 and 2020) were used to calibrate the hydrological model. Despite the relatively short time series, the results show a good performance. The simulated spring flows resulting from the PHIM + CemaNeige combination are of the right order of magnitude.

Over the past decades, a variety of ice control structures (ICSs) have been designed and built, but to date, there has been no systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of these structures. To achieve this objective, first an understanding of the interaction between different ice processes and the ICSs must be established. For this purpose, a total of four ICSs located in the province of Québec were monitored during the 2021–2022 winter. The results showed that the ice jam holding time could vary from 1.5 to 68.5 h. The release of the jam was mechanically driven when the ratio of release to initiation Froude number was higher than one and was thermally driven when this ratio was lower than one, and the water temperature increased between initiation and release. Also, as the ratio of the total pier spacing to upstream river width increased, the holding time decreased.

Une coulee de slush (bouillie de neige fondante) est un ecoulement rapide constitue d’un melange de neige fondante, d’eau, de boue et de debris de toutes sortes. Les sept sites analyses demontrent que les coulees de slush peuvent survenir dans des contextes topographiques fort differents qui presentent toutefois des similitudes au niveau du mode d’enneigement et des conditions hydro-meteorologiques. Les coulees de slush etudiees demarrent dans des ruisseaux d’ordre 1 ou 2, etroits et peu profonds, de pente tres variable (de 1° a plus de 30°), qui sont combles par des bouchons de neige dense soufflee par le vent ou transportee par les avalanches. Parce qu’ils s’opposent a la libre circulation des eaux de fusion lors des periodes de fonte acceleree, ces bouchons de neige favorisent la saturation du manteau neigeux jusqu’a la rupture sous l’effet combine de la pression hydrostatique et de la gravite. Les onze coulees analysees, qui se sont produites entre 1936 et 2013, permettent de definir deux scenarios hydro-meteorologiques propices a leur declenchement : 1) des redoux de longue duree caracterises par des temperatures qui restent positives pendant plusieurs jours consecutifs sans apport de precipitations liquides; 2) des redoux relativement courts (moins de 48 heures) couples a des precipitations liquides abondantes. Largement meconnues au Quebec, les coulees de slush pourraient etre plus frequentes a l’avenir en reponse au rechauffement climatique en cours.

The objective of this study is to use two hydrological indices (coefficients of variation and immoderation) to analyze the impacts of dam management methods on seasonal daily flow rate change downstream of three dams: Manouane (diversion-type management method), Ouareau (natural-type management method) and Matawin (inversion-type management method). The results show that this change is far greater downstream of the Matawin dam (characterized by an inversion-type management method) than downstream of the two other dams. Moreover, downstream of the Matawin dam, this daily flow rate change increases significantly over time, while decreasing downstream of the two other dams and in natural rivers. Lastly, this change is better correlated with climate downstream of the Ouareau dam than downstream of the two other dams. It is positively correlated with winter and spring temperatures as well as summer and fall rain. Contrary commonly accepted hypothesis, this study shows that the impacts of dams generally result in an increase of the seasonal flow rate change in Quebec.

Physical evidence for the drainage of glacial lakes remains relatively rare in depositional records, giving rise to much debate on the location of outlets and discharge pathways, as well as on the climate impact of the attendant meltwater forcing. Lake Ojibway developed following the withdrawal of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in northern Ontario and Quebec, Canada. The late-stage evolution of this large ice-dammed lake was influenced by the complex dynamics of the retreating ice margin, which highly complicates the identification of the termination of Lake Ojibway in glaciolacustrine sediment records. Here, we document the composition of sections of rhythmites that contain in their upper part an anomalously thick and whitish bed (10–15cm) that is in turn overlain by ∼1m of faintly bedded rhythmites. Grain-size analyses showed that the thick whitish bed consists primarily of fine to coarse silt (2–63μm), contrasting with the lower and upper rhythmites that are largely dominated by clay (<2μm). The detrital carbonate content of the thick silt bed is characterized by consistently high values (2.5 to 2.8%), whereas the bounding rhythmites show lower and highly variable values. Oxygen isotope measurements further show a marked change going from typical glacial meltwater values (∼ −29.6 to −27.7‰; VSMOW) for the lower rhythmites and the silt bed to modern-like meteoric values (−18.4 to −14.6‰) for the uppermost rhythmites. These data suggest that this marker bed may be associated with a major drawdown event that possibly corresponds to the final drainage of Lake Ojibway. AMS radiocarbon dating of ostracods extracted from the drainage bed also documents an important hardwater effect within the Ojibway basin.

Hydrological responses in cold regions are often complex and variable (both spatially and temporally) due to the complex and multiple interactions between the hydrological processes at play. Thus, there is a need to better understand and represent cold region hydrological processes within hydrological models. In this study, a physicallybased hydrological model has been developed using the Cold Regions Hydrological Model (CRHM) platform for the L’Acadie River Catchment in southern Quebec (Canada). Almost 70 % of the catchment is occupied by agricultural fields, being representative of the intensive farming landscape of the southern St-Lawrence lowlands, while the rest is mostly forested. The physical processes including blowing snow, snow interception in canopies, sublimation and snowmelt were simulated over 35 years using the CRHM platform. Hydrologic response units (HRUs), the smallest simulation spatial unit within the catchment, were derived based on the combination of land use/cover and vegetation types. Over the simulation period, considerable spatial variability was detected between agricultural and forested sites. Snow accumulation and associated snow water equivalent (SWE) were found to be higher in forested sites than agricultural sites, which can be explained by blowing snow transport from agricultural sites to the forested sites where aerodynamic roughness is greater. Higher rates of blowing snow sublimation were detected over the agricultural sites compared to snow intercepted in the forest canopies. This can be explained by the fact that there is a great amount of blowing snow over the agricultural sites, and thus available suspended snow for sublimation, while over the forested sites the snow is more firmly retained by the canopies and thus there is less blowing snow and consequently less blowing snow sublimation. In addition, although snow cover duration shows variation over the simulation period, the snow generally lasts longer in forested fields than in agricultural fields. Our findings indicating more snow in forested fields than agricultural (open) fields are contrary to the usual notion that there is less snow accumulation on forest ground due to the high rates of canopy sublimation. However, this is true for the landscapes dominated by forests, while our study area is dominated by agricultural fields, so snow erosion of agricultural fields and snow deposition in forested fields seem to compensate canopy losses. Taken together, it is shown that land use exerts a critical control on snow distributions in this type of landscape, and perhaps on possible implications for future snow hydrology of the catchment.

Quebec has experienced a significant decrease in the amount of snow and an increase in temperature during the cold season. The objective of this study is to analyze the impacts of these climate changes on the spatio-temporal variability of the daily maximum flows generated by snowmelt in winter and spring using several statistical tests of correlation (spatial variability) and long-term trend (temporal variability). The study is based on the analysis of flows measured in 17 watersheds (1930–2019) grouped into three hydroclimatic regions. Regarding the spatial variability, the correlation analysis revealed that in winter, the flows are positively correlated with the agricultural area and the daily maximum winter temperature. In the spring, the flows are positively correlated with the drainage density and the snowfall but negatively correlated with the area of wetlands and the daily maximum spring temperature. As for temporal variability (long-term trend), the application of eight statistical tests revealed a generalized increase in flows in winter due to early snowmelt. In the spring, despite the decreased snow cover, no negative trend was observed due to the increase in the spring rainfall, which compensates for the decrease in the snowfall. This temporal evolution of flows in the spring does not correspond to the predictions of climate models. These predict a decrease in the magnitude of spring floods due to the decrease in the snowfall in southern Quebec.

Snow avalanches are a major natural hazard for road users and infrastructure in northern Gaspesie. Over the past 11 years, the occurrence of nearly 500 snow avalanches on the two major roads servicing the area was reported. No management program is currently operational. In this study, we analyze the weather patterns promoting snow avalanche initiation and use logistic regression (LR) to calculate the probability of avalanche occurrence on a daily basis. We then test the best LR models over the 2012–2013 season in an operational forecasting perspective: Each day, the probability of occurrence (0–100%) determined by the model was classified into five classes avalanche danger scale. Our results show that avalanche occurrence along the coast is best predicted by 2 days of accrued snowfall [in water equivalent (WE)], daily rainfall, and wind speed. In the valley, the most significant predictive variables are 3 days of accrued snowfall (WE), daily rainfall, and the preceding 2 days of thermal amplitude. The large scree slopes located along the coast and exposed to strong winds tend to be more reactive to direct snow accumulation than the inner-valley slopes. Therefore, the probability of avalanche occurrence increases rapidly during a snowfall. The slopes located in the valley are less responsive to snow loading. The LR models developed prove to be an efficient tool to forecast days with high levels of snow avalanche activity. Finally, we discuss how road maintenance managers can use this forecasting tool to improve decision making and risk rendering on a daily basis.
