Le but de cette recherche qualitative est double: elle vise d'une part à cerner la nature des enjeux éthiques de la recherche-action féministe et à soumettre ces enjeux à la réalité à partir de l'étude de cas de recherche-action où ces enjeux se sont posés avec acuité.

Sky, un Hméga-club" en plein essor situé au coeur du village gai de Montréal, représente plusieurs tendances au sein des clubs et des villages gais de l'Amérique du Nord à la fin du XXième siècle. Ce projet aborde les opérations quotidiennes du Sky, en tenant compte de son architecture complexe, de ses pratiques de gestion, et de sa popularité à l'intérieur du village ainsi que des ramifications théoriques de cet établissement pour la communauté gaie et pour la culture des clubs de nuit en général. Au plan théorique, ce complexe récréatif présentement en expansion constitue un phénomène ni complètement opprimant, ni entièrement libérateur. Bien que le Sky offre certains des avantages d'un "méga-club" pour la communauté gaie--plus grande diversité, accessibilité, et communauté--il possède également les désavantages de ces établissements: la concentration du pouvoir économique, une moins grande présence gaie dans les rues, et la promotion de certaines identités et cultures gaies plutôt que d'autres.

Girls in male-dominated youth subcultures confront ideologies of gender which remain largely invisible and often tacitly accepted in many women's everyday lives. Punk girls choose to construct their femininity within a highly male-dominated, "masculinist," context; girls are present in such youth subcultures, but the masculine definition of their norms problematizes their participation. Thus, punk girls struggle to accommodate female gender norms within subcultural identities which are deliberately coded as "masculine." Although young women in America encounter the norms of the female gender role on a daily basis, punk girls' negotiations between the norms of femininity and those of punk open these prescriptions to critical examination which they might not otherwise be accorded. In this dissertation, I explore accounts of punk girls' engagements with both mainstream and subcultural gender norms. In constructing this account of girls' lived experiences in the punk subculture, I rely primarily upon the phenomenology, or experiential narrative, of punk girls' everyday lives. I elicited these accounts within the context of conducting participant observation in the punk scenes of four North American cities (Atlanta, Montreal, New Orleans, and San Francisco) from 1993 to 1995, conducting ethnographic interviews with forty punk girls. In the following, I explore various facets of punk girls' engagements with gender norms, including punk girls' narratives of engagement with the subculture; the construction of punk as a discourse of masculinity; punk girls' stylistic, behavioral, and discursive reconstructions of femininity; punk girls' experiences of public harassment and sexual harassment, and their strategic responses to these. I argue that these girls use the punk subculture in order to carry out resistances to varied forms of gender oppression, thereby developing stronger self-concepts in the face of adversity.

Ce mémoire présente une analyse du roman Des cailloux blancs pour les forêts obscures (Montréal: Leméac, 1987) de Jovette Marchessault. L'approche théorique utilisée est avant tout inspirée du travail de Marianne Hirsch (The Mother/Daughter Plot, 1989) qui revoit la notion de «roman familial» de Freud d'un point de vue féministe. Les réflexions de Luce Irigaray et de Claire Lejeune à propos de la notion identitaire et de la constitution de famille servent également à l'analyse. La question principale qui guide l'ensemble des quatre chapitres du mémoire est la suivante: en quoi les remises en question identitaires des personnages féminins et masculins arrivent-elles à transformer les structures de la famille patriarcale et les caractéristiques du roman familial traditionnel?

For this study, I have interviewed fourteen women composers of electroacoustic music in or near the three Canadian urban centres of Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Montreal: Ciaire Pich6, Lucie Jasmin, Pascale Trudel, Monique Jean, Helen Hall and Kathy Kennedy; Toronto: Gayle Young, Sarah Peebles, Wende Bartley, Elma Miller, Ann Southam, and Carol Ann Weaver; Vancouver: Hildegard Westerkamp and Susan Frykberg. These interviews were all conducted between January and November of 1993. References to the development of electroacoustic music in Canada are sparse in the existing literature, both in general histories of electroacoustic music, and in histories of Canadian music. And even though there seem to be some areas of change (for instance, recent publications in Quebec), women composers are under-represented in writings and recorded collections of electroacoustic music in Canada. Chapter Two situates the work of women composers in the Canadian scene, discussing particularly the work of Norma Beecroft, Marcelle Desch§nes, Diana McIntosh, and Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux. Chapter Three describes the metaphors, images and myths invoked in malestream discourses associated with electroacoustic music, in popular magazines, course texts and software. I investigate how my consultants’ language reflects and/or contests mainstream imagery, or how it might be framed by entirely different assumptions and experiences. Chapter Four is concerned with the institutional structures of electroacoustic music. I discuss how gendering exhibits itself in the division of labour in electroacoustic studio courses at universities, as well as in concert halls, conferences, and professional organizations. Excerpts from the interviews record my consultants experiences in these institutions, as students, teachers, and composers. In Chapter Five, I point out the variety of strategies that each composer uses to construct her identity within the world of electroacoustics. Each entry takes the form of a three or four page sketch, with quotes from the interview regarding the social environment, equipment choices, compositional styles, and particular pieces that my consultant discusses. Chapter Six discusses three pieces in detail: one by Susan Frykberg, Woman and House; one by Wende Bartley, A Silence Full of Sound; and one by Hildegard Westerkamp, Breathing Room. I focus on how each of the composers chooses to work with technology, and how her culturally-constructed position as a woman affects her work. I describe how my consultants imagine other stories to tell, and other possible lived social relations. The conclusions in Chapter Seven, in addition to suggesting areas for future research, discuss three themes that run throughout the study: the idea of gender as performance, the doubleness of my consultants' responses to technology, and the importance of the linguistic and musical metaphors that they use.
