Cet article propose de revisiter Awa : la revue de la femme noire à travers le prisme du genre, par une étude des modalités de présence et de représentation des femmes et des hommes qui écrivent dans le mensuel de 1964 à 1973. Il convoque à cette fin deux paramètres du magazine dont il élucide les enjeux littéraires et sociaux : les signatures des articles, entre anonymat, patronymat, prénonymat et pseudonymat, d’une part ; les correspondant·e·s rendu·e·s visibles, notamment dans la rubrique « La boîte à lettres » qui leur est consacrée, d’autre part. L’auctorialité des femmes dans ce magazine apparaît alors partagée, avec les hommes et entre elles : alors que les contributeurs participent par leurs signatures, particulièrement de textes littéraires, à cautionner Awa tout en en surveillant les contenus, les rédactrices y sont beaucoup plus souvent anonymes ou insérées au sein de collectifs susceptibles de les rendre individuellement invisibles. En avançant masquées et groupées, elles proposent des modes d’émancipation plus pratiques que théoriques, toujours susceptibles de reconduire des hiérarchies genrées en une période où l’accès au statut et à l’autorité d’auteur·e est bien moins assuré pour les femmes que pour les hommes. Leurs stratégies d’écriture et leurs trajectoires sociales n’en révèlent pas moins l’existence, autour du périodique, d’un espace vivant de solidarité et d’inventivité vis-à-vis des normes de genre.

This article examines how the Canadian immigration regime socially organizes the everyday lives of queer and trans migrants with precarious status. Drawing from key findings from an institutional ethnographic study, this article maps out the disjuncture between the actual experiences of queer and trans migrants with precarious status and the ideological and textual production of precarious status by the Canadian state. Making explicit this disjuncture reveals how the Canadian immigration regime enacts structural violence upon queer and trans migrants. This article also engages with the response-based approach to violence in order to understand how queer and trans migrants actively respond to this violence. In doing so, this article highlights the ways in which queer and trans migrants respond and resist the structural violence integral to the Canadian state’s production of precarious status.

This article assesses Exodus’ Egypt as lesbian bar culture of the 1940s and 1950s, treating the main characters of Moses, Pharaoh, Yhwh as competing butches for the femme, Israel. The article utilizes a gender reversal, queer-ideological critical approach in order to read the biblical text of Exodus 2-6 and 14 in the way accessible to the lesbian community.

One health emphasizes the interdependent health of humans, animals, and their shared environments and shows promise as an integrated, equitable transdisciplinary approach to important ecohealth issues. Notably, research or programming explicitly examining the intersection of gender and one health is limited, although females represent half of the human population and play important roles in human and animal health around the world. Recognizing these gaps, scholars from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in collaboration with United States Department of Agriculture convened a consultative workshop, ‘‘Women and One Health,’’ in 2016. This paper outlines the workshop methods and highlights outcomes toward shared terminology and integration of frameworks from one health, gender analysis, and women in agriculture. Further, recommendations for education, policy, and service delivery at the intersection of women’s empowerment and one health are offered as important efforts toward the dual goals of gender equality and sustainable health of humans,animals, and their shared ecosystems.

Previous studies of immigrant families have reported consistent findings concerning the positive effects of employed wives’ financial contributions and Western gender ideologies on women’s bargaining power in the family. This paper revisits this thesis. Data presented in this article are derived from a larger project based on 45 life-history interviews with Taiwanese immigrant women in a Midwest urban region. Findings suggest that women’s employment does not serve as a key factor that shapes spousal power relations in Taiwanese immigrant families. Rather, gendered work-family boundaries and individuals’ abilities construct main rationales in women’s interpretations of their division of labor at home and their dominance in financial management. None of the women interviewed consider Western culture as an inspiration for egalitarian gender ideology. In contrast, Confucian culture is often used by husbands and mothers-in-law to demand traditional gender practice, which is further reinforced and surveilled by the Taiwanese ethnic community. Therefore, the interconnections of work, family, money, culture, and power and their interactive effects on spousal relations are more complicated than previously suggested. This study also reveals varied forms of patriarchal bargaining in Taiwanese immigrant families. Married women tend to accommodate patriarchy in their housework assignment, but actively bargain in their management of family finances and persistence to seek employment. The findings suggest that heterogeneity within the research sample, household structure, and individuals’ subjectivities must be examined to understand the nuances and complexity of women’s gender strategies and bargaining power in immigration families. Theoretical implications of the study are also discussed.

Cet article propose d’étudier l’économie solidaire sous le prisme du genre à partir d’un double regard, critique et possibiliste. Ce double regard, inspiré à la fois de l’économie substantive polanyienne et des recherches féministes, éclaire la manière dont les pratiques d’économie solidaire renouvellent l’économique et le politique, compris ici à la fois comme catégories d’action et de pensée. Il met aussi en lumière les chemins multiples et sinueux de l’émancipation, fruit d’un entremêlement entre principes d’échange dont l’équilibre est en renouvellement permanent.

Indigenous communities in Canada suffer disproportionately from compromised water insecurity, with multiple negative implications. Some attention has been paid to gender and water insecurity in developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, but the topic has been neglected for subarctic settings. We conducted long-term research in Black Tickle, a remote Inuit community in Labrador, Canada, with no piped water and limited access to potable water. Our research was aimed at understanding the multiple dimensions of water security, identifying materialist responses, and conducting a pilot project in domestic rainwater harvesting. Water security emerged as a gendered phenomenon. We supplemented our reflective analysis on this research with two focus group discussions during which Inuit women described their experiences of water security. Participants reported that their physical and mental health are undermined by water insecurity and that water is a source of multiple stresses that demand resilience. Given a developing remittance economy, gender was identified as an increasingly significant determinant of water insecurity in this subarctic community. Having to retrieve water themselves, Inuit women experience altered gender norms and a persistent values conflict in addition to physical strain. Water acquisition is an added responsibility, impacting their labour load. Alternatively, in relying on available men to retrieve water, participants reported feeling guilty and anxious and they worried about men fetching water in dangerous weather conditions and in the vicinity of dangerous wildlife. Participants’ experiences make clear the urgency for a materialist response to water insecurity in the Indigenous subarctic.

This article investigates how naturalized models of hegemonic masculinity affect race and sexuality in the James Bond film series. Through close analysis of film dialogue and paralinguistic cues, the article examines how the sexualities of East Asian female and male characters are constructed as oversexed and undersexed, respectively. The analysis therefore affirms Connell's (1995) conception of white heterosexual masculinity as exemplary: East Asian characters are positioned not only as racial Others, but as bodies upon which Bond's heterosexual masculinity is reflected and affirmed as normative and, by extension, ideal. In this way, race is curiously invoked to ‘explain’ sexuality, and Bond's unmarked white masculinity becomes the normative referent for expressions of heterosexual desire. By showing how the sexuality of East Asian characters is typecast as non-normative, the article gestures toward the possibility of theorizing racialized performances of heterosexuality as queer.

Loin d’être une entité anhistorique, l’homosexualité masculine se caractérise par les différentes formes de subjectivation auxquelles elle a donné lieu. Ainsi, la décennie 1970 voit s’opposer trois modes rivaux de subjectivité homosexuelle : l’homophile, représenté en France par l’association Arcadie, fondée par André Baudry (1922-2018) et éditrice d’un périodique paru de 1954 à 1982 ; le gay, émergeant dans le sillage des événements de Stonewall à New York (1969), et donnant naissance à un Front Gay de Libération ; l’homosexualité révolutionnaire telle qu’elle prend forme après 1968 dans l’éphémère Front homosexuel d’action révolutionnaire (FHAR) dont les positions sont présentées ici principalement à travers les thèses de Guy Hocquenghem (1946-1988). Loin de représenter un simple clivage intergénérationnel, ces oppositions représentent avant tout différentes conceptions sociales et politiques de l’homosexualité, différentes manières de penser la communauté, mais aussi des modes de subjectivité dans lesquels la vie homosexuelle peut s’incarner dans la période antérieure à l’épidémie de sida.

The view that humans comprise only two types of beings, women and men, a framework that is sometimes referred to as the “gender binary,” played a profound role in shaping the history of psychological science. In recent years, serious challenges to the gender binary have arisen from both academic research and social activism. This review describes 5 sets of empirical findings, spanning multiple disciplines, that fundamentally undermine the gender binary. These sources of evidence include neuroscience findings that refute sexual dimorphism of the human brain; behavioral neuroendocrinology findings that challenge the notion of genetically fixed, nonoverlapping, sexually dimorphic hormonal systems; psychological findings that highlight the similarities between men and women; psychological research on transgender and nonbinary individuals’ identities and experiences; and developmental research suggesting that the tendency to view gender/sex as a meaningful, binary category is culturally determined and malleable. FéminÉtudes est une revue étudiante, féministe et multidisciplinaire. La revue est née en 1995 de l’initiative d’étudiantes féministes dans l’intérêt de partager leurs recherches et de créer un groupe affinitaire. La revue est dirigée par des collectifs de rédaction bénévoles et autogérés, et soutenue par l’Institut de Recherches en Études Féministes (IREF) de l’Université du Québec à Montréal. Au fil des ans, FéminÉtudes a réussi à se bâtir une réputation et une légitimité dans le champ de la recherche en études féministes, tout en offrant une tribune au travaux et aux réflexions de dizaines d’étudiant.e.s. Au-delà de la recherche, c’est également pour l’avancement des luttes féministes que FéminÉtudes souhaite continuer à grandir.

Cet article propose d’abord de définir la recherche collaborative en sciences de l’éducation et de présenter la mise en contexte de chacune des deux études doctorales. Les défis, les surprises et les réussites des deux chercheuses seront soulignés au regard de leur expérience et de leur préoccupation à gérer les trois étapes de la recherche collaborative, la cosituation, la coopération et la coproduction » [Résumé original]

This article highlights the importance of recognizing both the ontology of impairment as it relates to the creation of the disabled identity as well as why articulations of the disabled identity being ‘crip’ obfuscate potential politics. Examining how the disabled identity has been cast as a coherent social and political category, rather than the messy and complicated identity it truly is, I argue the adoption of a post-structuralist orientation by activists and advocates is bad for disability politics. Providing two examples, the first focusing on a publicized rape case of a person with an intellectual disability and the second on the importance of disability rights claims based on visibility of impairment, I show how articulations like those made in crip theory can have serious, negative implications for the lived experience of people with disabilities. I conclude with a call for disability studies scholars to engage disability politics in their work.

We review how recent family scholarship theorizes recent family change as either a process of deinstitutionalization, in which family can no longer be understood in institutional terms, or a process of diversification, in which family life is expanding but not losing its institutional character. We argue that both approaches emerge out of and depend on a social institutional framework for understanding family that was developed in 20th-century sociology. Despite producing a wealth of research, both approaches have difficulty adequately conceptualizing the institutional character of family and providing ways of theorizing family change. We introduce an alternative to a social institutional framework, a Weberian institutional logics approach, which provides a different way to understand the institutional character of family life and thereby affords new interpretations and avenues for theory and research on family change in the 21st century.

This article examines the evolution of the sociotechnical systems that is leading to a massive increase in the overall indebtedness of marginalized populations in the Global South. I analyze the processes through which Big Data (or alternative data) technologies are transforming the infrastructure of fringe finance, the nature of its power relations, and its capacities. The article identifies the consequences of these technological transformations on financial practices and illustrates the qualitative nature of the changes involved. I propose that while these innovations have increased the power of this market to capture value, they have also increased risks to indebted populations and the infrastructure's stability. I argue that these financial practices, enhanced by the power of Big Data, have made the infrastructure of fringe finance dangerously hermetic to careful consideration of the productive capacities of those being targeted for inclusion into the formal financial system, thereby making it potentially dysfunctional.

This article presents empirical data from survey research into lesbian and queer masculinities in the United Kingdom, conducted in 2017, which garnered over two hundred responses. Four dominant themes emerged from the data gathered. These themes addressed: distinctions and relationships between the sexed body and gender identity; the contradictions of identifying with masculinities while critiquing hegemonic masculinity; a sense of anxiety or loss around a perceived decline of lesbian community and identities within it, particularly the identity of butch lesbian; and also the great variety of trans identities and how they are defined and distinct. There were many considered responses under all the above themes on the changing meaning of the butch lesbian signifier, from forty self-identified butch lesbians as well as from those identifying with other terms, and this topic is the focus of this article. I will explore the meaning and resonance of the butch lesbian identity in the UK context, and the sometimes rocky relationship to the explosion of newer terms describing sex and gender identities, such as masculine of centre (MOC), non-binary (NB), gender non-conforming (GNC) or transmasculine. While there was some unease that newer terms might or may have already eclipsed the category of butch, alongside a common assertion that the category of butch is considered old fashioned, ‘butch’ was still a term that valiantly persisted and held sentimental and political value. Many participants were keen that this identity be included and distinguished in the contemporary rainbow of possibilities for sexuality and gender identities in the UK.
