As part of a larger multi-method study, 15 Black women college students participated in focus group discussions on the body. Contrary to popular theories that propose that Black women are protected by a “Black Culture” that buffers them from negative effects of body representations—thereby leaving them with higher body esteem—the themes that emerged in the focus group discussions indicate that young Black women are indeed feeling (1) pressures to be thin, (2) pressures from the preferences of men of diverse ethnicities, (3) competition with other Black women in the realms of beauty, and (4) a strong sense of being misrepresented by media images of thin Black women. These results not only indicate that body image issues are of real pressing concern to young Black women, but that psychological research methodologies may be adding to the misrepresentation of young Black women and their struggles. Qualitative methods must be utilized in order to hear more clearly the voices of Women of Color.

To a large extent, scholarship on black politics often focuses primarily on institutions, rule of law, processes, political actors, and citizens but with very little attention to issues of gender and sexuality. In contrast, the principal aim of this book is to explore what the author sees as the inextricable links between racism and gender. The basic thesis of this well-written, important, and provocative book is that the fight against racism, especially the “new racism,” can never be won without first challenging sexism, which simultaneously oppresses African-American men and women.

This article provides a comprehensive review of the emerging domestic violence literature using a race, class, gender, sexual orientation intersectional analysis and structural framework fostered by women of color and their allies to understand the experiences and contexts of domestic violence for marginalized women in U.S. society. The first half of the article lays out a series of challenges that an intersectional analysis grounded in a structural framework provides for understanding the role of culture in domestic violence. The second half of the article points to major contributions of such an approach to feminist methods and practices in working with battered women on the margins of society.

Le contexte dans lequel se déroule l’action politique des féministes noires latino-américaines et des Caraïbes est marqué par l’histoire de la colonisation et de l’esclavage. À travers les figures des Ialodês , symboles d’autorité féminine dans certaines cultures africaines, amenées au Brésil notamment au travers des pratiques religieuses, l’autrice montre certains éléments de la pratique politique des femmes afro-descendantes qui précèdent le féminisme théorique, créé en Occident. Elle critique le féminisme latino-américain et des Caraïbes, influencé par celui d’Europe et des États-Unis, notamment pour son caractère excluant, du fait de sa vision classiste et raciste, tout en reprenant certain de ses apports. Werneck critique par ailleurs la politique d’identité pratiquée par une grande partie du mouvement de femmes afro-descendantes, qu’elle considère insuffisant pour permettre la mobilisation politique, pourtant nécessaire face à la mondialisation économique et les nouveaux contextes historiques. Elle présente ainsi de nouveaux défis au mouvement social anti-raciste et anti-sexiste.

Black studies emerged from the tumultuous social and civil rights movements of the 1960s and empowered African Americans to look at themselves in new ways and pass on a dignified version of Black history. However, it also enriched traditional disciplines in profound and significant ways. Proponents of Black and ethnic studies confronted the false notion that scholarly investigations were objective and unbiased explorations of the range of human knowledge, history, creativity, artistry, and scientific discovery. While most people believe that the movement to secure voluntary reproductive control for women centered solely on abortion rights, for many women abortion was not the only, or even primary, focus.Jennifer Nelson tells the story of the feminist struggle for legal abortion and reproductive rights in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s through the particular contributions of women of color. She explores the relationship between second-wave feminists, who were concerned with a woman's right to choose, Black and Puerto Rican Nationalists, who were concerned that Black and Puerto Rican women have as many children as possible "for the revolution," and women of color themselves, who negotiated between them. Contrary to popular belief, Nelson shows that women of color were able to successfully remake the mainstream women's liberation and abortion rights movements by appropriating select aspects of Black Nationalist politics--including addressing sterilization abuse, access to affordable childcare and healthcare, and ways to raise children out of poverty--for feminist discourse.

In this lively and engaging book, Lisa Gail Collins examines the work of contemporary African American women artists. Her study comes at a time when an unprecedented number of these artists-photographers, filmmakers, painters, installation and mixed-media artists-have garnered the attention and imagination of the art-viewing public. To better understand the significance of this particular historical moment in American visual arts, Collins focuses on four "problems" that recur when these artists confront their histories: the documentation of truth; the status of the black female body; the relationship between art and cultural contact and change; and the relationship between art and black girlhood. By examining the social and cultural histories which African American women artists engage, Collins illuminates a dialogue between past and present imagemakers. The Art of History is a major contribution to the study of American visual culture. Dans les communautés noires, souvent l'argument - qui est en passant négrophobe - est que notre problème principal est que l'on ne pourrait rien faire ensemble ou qu'il n'y a pas de soutien. La vie d'une organisation, comme tout groupe, est traversée de rapport de pouvoirs, plus ou moins explicites mais aussi de conflits voir de violence. En tant qu'afrofeministe la question des conflits et de la violence est une question centrale lorsqu'on pense aux lieux et la sécurité des femmes Noires dans les mouvements noirs Pour parler de la résolution de conflit, je reçois une compatriote diabolique haïtienne, Nathela Batraville Nathalie est professeure adjointe en études féministes à l'Université Concordia. Ses travaux portent sur l'afroféminisme, l'abolition de la prison, les théories décoloniales et queers, et les productions culturelles de l'Atlantique noir.
